Fight Hunger Patch Project – Nutrition Patch
Learn about healthy eating and the relationship between hunger and health.
- Organize a food drive and promote healthy eating. Work with your troop, school, service unit, or another local organization to encourage community engagement. Ask for nutritious, nonperishable items and drop them off at Harvesters—The Community Food Network or at a food pantry within your county. Visit the Give Food section to learn more.
- Visit a local community garden. Volunteer your time to help with maintenance and upkeep.
- Does your family have its own garden? Plant an extra row to donate to Harvesters for community members in need. Alternatively, drop off excess garden produce to Harvesters’ Plant A Row for the Hungry program.
- Choose two recipes from the Harvesters’ Cookbook and try your hand at cooking on a budget. For younger Girl Scouts, look for recipes that do not require cooking. Make sure to ask a troop leader or guardian for help.
- Visit www.choosemyplate.gov and click on each food group to explore. Locate the map and click on different states to learn regional facts, identify locally grown foods, and find recipes that utilize foods found within your state.
- Go to www.fsis.usda.gov and choose an activity to complete in order to learn more about food safety.
- Follow this link: www.myplate.gov. Choose three MyPlate videos to demonstrate small steps you can take to move toward a healthier lifestyle. (All Ages)
- Watch a video to learn about farmers’ markets and the role they play in communities. Have you ever been to a farmer’s market? What makes them different from grocery stores? How can eating locally sourced food contribute to a nutritious diet? Discuss these questions and any others that might occur to you. (Daisies-Juniors) (Cadettes-Ambassadors)
