You’ve probably started to notice colorful hearts popping up across the Kansas City metro. It’s part of a new public arts campaign, Parade of Hearts. Harvesters is grateful to our friends from presenting sponsor Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City for selecting us to host a piece of this artwork.

We have a heart for fighting hunger, and hope you’ll learn more about it when you come to visit our heart by artist Suze Ford, Fine Art.

Artist Suze Ford loves creating pieces with bright, vibrant colors.

When she learned about the KC Parade of Hearts, she jumped at the chance to create a one-of-a-kind work.

“I just thought it was super. It was going to be fun. And I really like pushing the parameters of my art and like doing things on a large scale,” said Ford.

Suze applied spray-paints of pinks, blues, greens and yellows to give the heart a bold, beautiful design to withstand the elements.

It’s called ‘The Darkness Hides from the Light’.

“The original inspiration was from a large commission I did.  And I just felt like the entire vibe of it was about life and light and joy and specifically in the times we all been going through in the last couple of years…the pandemic and everything that’s happening and just a lot of this darkness happening in the world,” Ford said. “And I felt like what better way to bring light into this kind of situation as to create art that makes people feel joy.”

Blue KC selected Harvesters as the home for one of its eight hearts around the region.

“I think it’s so cool because it’s just it’s fitting very perfectly with what I’m about, which is about bringing light and joy, helping others kindness, generosity to other people,” Ford said, upon learning where her heart would be planted.

We hope you’ll come visit the heart, and when you snap a selfie, be sure to scan the QR code at the base with your phone to learn more about the artist and our heart. While you’re at it, we encourage you to learn more about harvesters and the fight against hunger.
