Federal Nutrition Programs
There are many federal nutrition programs and each one serves a unique purpose. The majority of recipients helped by these programs are children and seniors.
Federal nutrition programs are woven into the fabric of our communities, helping people access the nutrition they may need at various points in their lives:
- SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as Food Stamps)
- D-SNAP (SNAP for those impacted by disasters)
- TEFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program)
- CSFP (Commodity Supplemental Food Program for Seniors)
- S-EBT (Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer Program for Children)
- NSLP (National School Lunch Program)
- SBP (School Breakfast Program)
- CACFP (Child and Adult Care Food Program)
- SFSP (Summer Food Service Program for Children)
- WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children)
- WFMNP (WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program)
- SFMNP (Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program)
- Senior congregate meals
- Home-delivered nutrition services (i.e. Meals on Wheels)
Most of these public/government benefits are delivered at least in part through community partners. Many community members might not even know that these local programs they rely on are made possible by the federal government.
