On Monday, May 4, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly signed an official Proclamation declaring May 9 Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Day. Now in its 34th year, Stamp Out Hunger is the largest single-day food drive in the U.S., put on by the National Association of Letter Carriers. Local support in our service area is also provided by Price Chopper and Dillons Food Stores.

If you live in the Kansas City, Topeka or Manhattan metro areas, all you need to do to participate is fill the Stamp Out Hunger bag you received in the mail (or any plastic bag) with nonperishable food items (below) and leave it near your mailbox Saturday morning for pickup by your mail carrier or a volunteer. Every donation supports Harvesters’ mission to provide food for those in need, and it’s super easy to donate.

There will be more than several hundred donations that will need to be picked up, so don’t be alarmed if it doesn’t get picked up the first day. You can leave it out for a few days if needed.

Great items to donate are:

Rice
Peanut butter
Canned beans
Canned meat
Canned fruits and veggies
Pasta
Dried herbs and spices
Cereal
