The Coverdale Family Gives Back
The current situation that we’re facing reveals the need for services like Harvesters,” Brent says of hunger relief during the pandemic. “A place like Harvesters becomes more important than ever.”
Brent Coverdale has been volunteering with his wife, Michel, and their two children — Luke, a high school senior, and Julia, a sophomore at Kansas State — for the past five years.
The family began giving time sorting items at Harvesters’ Kansas City facility with church and school groups. Over the years, they became monthly volunteers in Lawrence and now help distribute food to their neighbors directly at the Harvesters mobile pantry that visits First United Methodist Church in Lawrence, Kan.
Brent appreciates the opportunity to support his local community alongside his family. He also says he’s impressed by the quality and diversity of the groceries he sorts and distributes. It gives him comfort to know so much good food is reaching his neighbors rather than ending up in a landfill.
The family encourages others to join the fight against hunger by giving their time. Michel says she's always telling her co-workers how rewarding her volunteer experience is. Her children also are vocal about how much they enjoy helping their neighbors.
“It’s a really nice feeling to help people,” says Julia, who’s studying anthropology in college.
“It shows you never really know the background and struggles people are facing,” Luke adds of his volunteer experience, “You should try and help as many people as you can.”
We are truly grateful for the Coverdale family’s partnership in our hunger-relief work. Volunteers change lives for the better every day!
