Valerie never expected to struggle. She and her husband, Eric, worked full-time at the same company and could easily provide for themselves and their teenage son. But nearly two years ago, during a sweep of layoffs, Valerie and Eric both lost their jobs.
We met Valerie at Jewish Family Services (JFS), a Harvesters partner in Overland Park, Kan., and she told us what a difficult time they’d been having. Eric only received 12 weeks of unemployment, and though he picked up some side jobs, their finances really took a hit.
“Our home was foreclosed…we’re still digging ourselves out,” Valerie says. She also described how helpful it was to visit the food pantry. Saving money on groceries means they can afford to pay other bills and get themselves back on better financial footing. It also means they’ll be able to share a special holiday meal with their son.
The couple is optimistic about the future. They’ve both started new jobs — Valerie in life insurance and Eric at a local energy company. They couldn’t be more grateful for your support.
“You don’t even know us,” she says with tears in her eyes. “All I can say is thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thanks for the love and sharing.”
