After a decade as an educator, Jillian Haynes knows how vital regular meals are to kids’ growth, development and learning. As senior recreation director at Hillcrest Community Center in Kansas City, Mo., she’s able to provide girls and boys with a healthy afternoon snack each weekday through Harvesters’ Kids Cafe program.
Jillian says many of the children she serves go home to an empty house or apartment, and for some, the snack at Hillcrest might be their evening meal. Fortunately, by partnering with Harvesters, she can ensure they have access to nutritious food.
During holiday vacation from school, students are at an increased risk of hunger without free and reduced-price meals in the school cafeteria. Hillcrest also offers a day camp for kids during Thanksgiving and winter breaks to provide a safe environment, enriching activities and plenty of nutritious food.
“I like that the food we give is healthy,” Jillian says. “[The kids] need that nutrition.”
By helping feed children in need, you give their caregivers real peace of mind. Jillian says parents tell her how surprised they are by the quality of the food at Hillcrest and how much they appreciate it.
