John, 76, has a big heart. He lives at Heritage House, a section 8 housing complex in Independence, Mo., and began sharing groceries with his neighbors across the hall a while back. John soon learned many other older adults in his building were missing meals — and lacked transportation to get to the Harvesters mobile pantry he’d been visiting.
"We’ve got a lot of seniors at Heritage House who simply don’t have enough food every day,” he says of his neighbors’ situation. “They’re getting by on what they can find — maybe one meal. It’s tragic.”
John knew Harvesters could help. He connected his new friends with the mobile pantry and now picks up healthy groceries for himself and six other seniors at his complex each month.
As he gets older, John wants to make sure his neighbors can still receive food, even if he’s no longer able to pick it up and bring it to them on his own. Thankfully, because of your help, Heritage House is becoming a Harvesters food distribution site this year!
As someone who benefits from the mobile pantry himself, John says it’s a relief to be able to access healthy fresh food, which is often out of his budget at the grocery store.
“I’m grateful,” John says with a warm smile.
