At Turner Elementary school in Kansas City, Kan., about 80 percent of students receive free or reduced-price school meals. That means most of these kids are at risk for hunger on the weekend when school meals aren’t available.
Thankfully, your generosity is helping cover this significant meal gap by providing BackSnacks in partnership with Gear for Sports, whose employees volunteer to help with the BackSnack program at Turner Elementary.
Sheri Garner runs the BackSnack program at Turner and knows many of the kids personally. She says they’re often low on food at home, have experienced hardships like a house fire and need a hand up to make sure their families have meals on the table.
Beyond alleviating childhood hunger, BackSnack gives kids a sense of security by ensuring they have a dependable source of food each weekend. Sheri also uses the program to teach students responsibility. Each participating child receives their backpack of food on Thursday and must remember to bring the bag back to be cleaned the following day.
Gear for Sports then collects the empty bags, cleans them and refills them with kid-friendly meals from Harvesters to be returned to Turner Elementary the following week.
Turner has been hosting the program since 2000, and each week, 75 students pick up a BackSnack bag.
“[BackSnack] helps the kids and is a blessing,” Sheri says.
Consistent nutrition is vital for everyone — but especially for children, who need good food to be able to learn, grow and thrive.
Your support helps build a bright future for kids who don’t have reliable access to healthy food. Please consider giving here.
