Harvesters cares about the health of our community. We strive to provide the most nutritious food possible to our neighbors in need and envision a time when everyone has enough nutritious food to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Why does it matter? Because there are hundreds of thousands of food insecure members of our community who rely on food assistance and their health matters to us all.
Food insecurity affects the health of our community in many ways. When children don’t have enough to eat, they do poorly in school. Adults eating inexpensive, unhealthy food to help make ends meet will be less productive at work and may experience diet-related chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension. And seniors without access to healthy, affordable food will be less likely to keep living independently.
Check out this video explaining the connection between hunger and health.
Hold a Food Drive
Hold a food drive with neighbors or co-workers and collect healthy food for hungry children, families and seniors in our community. Contact our Food Drive Department at either 816.929.3055 or 785.861.7750 or email email@example.com for a list of suggested items.
Take Your Can to Work Day Food Drive
Next month Harvesters will celebrate Take Your Can to Work Day! Get all the details on this food drive and sign up your business to participate by pledging at least one can of food per employee.
When donating food, check out MyPlate for guidance or take a look at our Healthy Food Donation List.
MyPlate is a reminder to find your healthy eating style and build it throughout your lifetime. Everything you eat and drink matters. The right mix can help you be healthier now and in the future. This means:
Focus on variety, amount, and nutrition.
Choose foods and beverages with less saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars.
Start with small changes to build healthier eating styles.
Support healthy eating for everyone.
Contact our Volunteer Department at 816.929.3090 or 785.861.7750 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to register for any of these opportunities.
Harvesters' Demonstration Garden
Harvesters is looking for volunteers, ages 12+, to help in our on-site demonstration garden. All planting, watering, weeding and harvesting is done under the guidance of a Master Gardener. Green thumbs not required!
Mobile Food Pantry Distribution Volunteers
We are currently recruiting volunteers who will assist at mobile food pantry distributions by distributing Harvesters provided recipes and nutrition information. The mobile food distribution program takes available food to where it is needed most. Mobile food pantries distribute fresh produce and other nutritious foods to families in need at sites where access to food assistance is limited. Volunteers are needed in both the Kansas City and Topeka area one Saturday month for a couple hours (6-month commitment required).
Help Harvesters provide healthy, fresh produce to hungry families, children and seniors. Every dollar donated can provide three meals. Support Harvesters by donating here.
Contact your representatives in Congress and let them know that we need their support to improve and strengthen federal nutrition programs, and help low-income families and children have a more direct path to proper nutrition. Go to our Give Voice page for contact information for your representatives and sign up for advocacy email alerts.
